Essex County Clerk Christopher Durkin released the following statement on the death of former Governor Richard J. Codey:
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Governor Richard J. Codey. He was a champion for people who were less fortunate than he was. He was a voice for the voiceless. He rose up over a long and powerful career of public service to be a priceless advocate for people and families dealing with mental illness. He went undercover at hospitals and facilities to raise awareness of the struggles and the needs of people dealing with mental illness. His advocacy resulted in needed legislation and influenced people to do the right thing. My sincere condolences to Mary Jo, Kevin, and Chris.”
