Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill released the following statement on the death of former Governor Richard J. Codey:
“We mourn the passing of Governor Richard Codey, a true local legend who epitomized public service for more than 50 years. I had the privilege of working in his administration, where his steady leadership, decency, and deep love for the people of New Jersey were always evident.
“Governor Codey was a tireless fighter for our state, with trailblazing work that helped lead not only New Jersey but the nation on education, equality, gun safety, and so many other critical issues. I am especially grateful for his pioneering leadership on mental and behavioral health, an area too often overlooked, where his compassion and courage made a lasting difference for countless families.
“As a Montclair resident, I was proud that Montclair was part of his district, and he was a constant, familiar presence in our community. From his pride in Seton Hall basketball to coaching youth teams and even coaching against my son, Governor Codey showed that public service did not stop at the State House. He met people where they were, led with humility, and remained deeply connected to the lives of the families he served.
“Alixon and I are keeping the Codey family and his loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time.”
