There’s a new face on season 2 of “High Potential.”
The Tuesday, Jan. 27, episode of “High Potential” introduced Detective Adam Karadec’s (Daniel Sunjata) ex-fiancée Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson). Viewers might recognize Watson from her role as Beth Pearson on the NBC drama “This Is Us,” which aired from 2016 to 2022. She also played Louis C.K.’s wife Janet on the FX series “Louie.”
Watson’s other television credits include “The Residence” (Jasmine Haney), “The Following” (Cindy), “The Blacklist” (Ellie) and “NCIS” (Nikki Jardine).
Warning: Spoilers ahead for season 2 of “High Potential.”
Karadec first mentioned his ex-fiancée during season 1 of “High Potential,” telling Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson) that the relationship ended due to him putting work ahead of romance. In Tuesday’s episode, Karadec ran into Lucia for the first time in years. The exes caught up over coffee, making Karadec uncharacteristically late for work.
Both Morgan and Lieutenant Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) encouraged Karadec to try again with Lucia, and he eventually took their advice. The episode ended with Karadec and Lucia heading off to a dinner date, while Morgan looked slightly sad.
Morgan and Karadec are friends and colleagues, but “High Potential” has hinted at romantic tension between them in the past. Earlier this season, Karadec looked less than thrilled as Morgan chatted with new police captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) at a bar.
“High Potential” showrunner Todd Harthan recently told Us Weekly that he wants to leave it ambiguous whether Karadec’s feelings about Morgan and Wagner are “protection or jealousy.”

“It’s that fine line that we walk on the show. I don’t ever really want to tell the audience definitively which way he’s feeling, but we’re playing with a lot of that as we dig deeper into the season,” Harthan explained. “Because things are going to start to get a little bit messier.”
“High Potential” centers on Morgan, whose exceptionally high IQ leads her to a consultant position with the Los Angeles Police Department. She uses her extensive well of esoteric knowledge to assist the Major Crimes Division.
“High Potential” airs on ABC Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Hulu the day after they air.
