Elijah Arroyo and Andy Borregales will take the field at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, for Super Bowl LX on Sunday night.
They will be adversaries on Sunday — Borregales playing for the Patriots and Arroyo for the Seahawks — but a year ago, they were teammates with the Hurricanes.
Both players had strong careers at Miami. Here is a look at what they accomplished at UM and how their first NFL seasons have played out.
Andy Borregales
The former Hurricanes kicker has become a crucial player for the Patriots. Before that, he was a top-level kicker for Miami.
Borregales, who kicked for Chaminade-Madonna and Hialeah Champagnat in high school, arrived at Miami before the 2021 season — one season after his older brother, Jose Borregales, won the Groza Award at UM.
Borregales immediately became a solid college kicker, making 81 percent of his field-goal tries as a freshman. He was an All-ACC honorable mention as a freshman (and again as a sophomore). Borregales was a 2023 All-ACC first-teamer.
In his final season at Miami, Borregales made a career-best 94.7 percent of his field goals, missing only one attempt all year. He was a first-team all-conference pick for the second season in a row.
Borregales ended his UM tenure with a program-best 405 points.
After Borregales’ success at Miami, the Patriots made him the first kicker taken in the 2025 NFL draft (and the first UM kicker drafted in decades). Borregales won the kicking job in the preseason, and he has had a solid rookie campaign. He has made 31 of his 38 kicks during the regular season and postseason.
However, Borregales struggled in the AFC title game, missing two out of three field goal attempts.
Elijah Arroyo
Arroyo was a touted prospect coming out of Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman High. However, he was limited in 2022 and 2023 due to an ACL tear.
When Arroyo was fully healthy in 2024, he became one of the ACC’s top tight ends. He racked up 590 yards with seven touchdowns on 35 catches that season.
The Seahawks took Arroyo with the 50th pick in last year’s draft. But unfortunately for Arroyo and his team, he has spent part of his season on the bench with a knee injury. Arroyo played 339 snaps and has 15 catches for 179 yards and a touchdown.
However, Arroyo was activated from the injured reserve before the NFC title game. He did not play in the game.
