(ASBURY PARK, NJ) — New Jersey native and award-winning playwright Tom Cavanaugh is making waves in the 2026 awards season, securing a prestigious nomination as a Finalist for the 2026 TASTE AWARDS. Often called the “Oscars of Food, Fashion, and Lifestyle Media,” the Beverly Hills-based awards recognize the year’s best achievements in sensory-driven storytelling.
The nomination highlights a standout year for the NJ resident, whose film FRANNY’S COOKIES recently won Best Long Short Film at the 2026 Krampus Festival in Asbury Park. The win reinforces Cavanaugh’s deep connection to the local arts scene, where he continues to produce work that resonates both locally and internationally.
A Global Perspective with Local Roots
Born in Newark and a graduate of Seton Hall University, Cavanaugh has long used the backdrop of the tri-state area to inform his sharp, socially conscious narratives. While his work has taken him to stages in Hong Kong, Bosnia, and Italy, his current focus remains on the storytelling power of the American kitchen and the community ties found in his east coast home.
“There is a specific rhythm and heart to life here that has always informed my writing,” says Cavanaugh. “Receiving this recognition for a film about legacy and tradition— The goal is always to find the ‘flavor’ of the human experience and freeze those lightning-in-a-bottle moments of truth.”

FRANNY’S COOKIES is a poignant cinematic exploration of legacy and memory. The film centers on the life of Fran Gennuso, a culinary figure whose passion for baking serves as a universal language for human connection. Cavanaugh’s transition from the “gritty workshops” of Off-Broadway to the cinematic lens allows him to capture how a simple Christmas Cookie can carry the weight of generations.
Industry Momentum & Elite Collaborations
An MFA graduate of the Actors Studio Drama School, Cavanaugh was recently invited into the Playwright/Directors Workshop at The Actors Studio in New York. He is an active member of: The Actors Gym (Bobby Moresco); Naked Angels NY; New Ambassadors; The Dramatists Guild of America; We Make Movies (Film Collective).
The TASTE AWARD nomination follows the massive success of his latest stage work, BARKLEE—a comedy-drama concerning a service dog and the legal system—and his 2024 Fade In Awards Grand Prize win for the screenplay BEDBUGGERS.
