Twenty-eight years after Czechia knocked Wayne Gretzky, Eric Lindros and Patrick Roy out of the Nagano Olympics, the country nearly did it again to a new generation of Canadian NHL stars.
Canada survived a scare on Wednesday at the Milano Cortina Games to advance to the semifinals, coming back from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits to send it to 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime, where forward Mitch Marner provided the heroics.
After accepting a drop pass from 19-year-old wunderkind Macklin Celebrini, Marner split two Czech defenders and went backhand shelf on goaltender Lukas Dostal, sending the Canadian fans in attendance at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena into a frenzy.
