For the second year in a row, New Jersey is the second-highest earning state in the nation, according to new data.
New Jersey’s median household income was $104,294 in 2025, according to the American Community Survey, the most recently available data. That’s up from the previous year, when the median income was $99,781.
Massachusetts, with a median household income of $104,828, was the only state that ranked above New Jersey in 2025.
However, residents in Washington, D.C., out-earn both states. Households in the U.S. capital had a median income of $109,707 last year.
A household is any group of people who live in a housing unit together, according to the definition used by the Census.
The Census also calculates median incomes for the narrower categories of families, non-families and married-couple families.
New Jersey came in fourth in the nation for incomes in the families and married-couple households categories. Only Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and Maryland had higher incomes last year.
New Jersey ranked seventh in the nation for non-family households, which includes people living together who are unrelated.
The highest earners of all? Married-couple families in Washington, D.C., earned the most in all categories with a median income of $228,926, according to the Census.
Non-family households in West Virginia had the lowest median income at $33,866.
