The death of a 4-year-old in Wimauma last month has been ruled a homicide, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
Deputies said they were called to the 2500 block of Tee Time Road at about 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, where they found a child “suffering from upper body trauma” that led to death, according to a news release from the agency.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the manner of death to be homicide, the sheriff’s office said in an update provided on Wednesday afternoon.
A report on the Florida Department of Children and Families database of state child deaths says that on Feb. 20 in Hillsborough County, a “4-year-old child was pronounced deceased after he was found unresponsive while playing outside unattended with a sibling.”
“This is a heartbreaking case, and our detectives are working tirelessly to determine the events that led to this tragedy,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring anyone responsible is held fully accountable.”
No other information was immediately released.
