Evan King and John Peers earned a stunning victory at the Miami Open presented by Itau on Sunday when they staged a comeback to upset the recent Acapulco champions Marcelo Melo and Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-4 in the opening round.
In a match of narrow margins, King and Peers maintained their composure to avoid an early loss. While trailing by a set and 2/5 in the second-set tie-break, they reeled off five consecutive points to clinch the set, eventually sealing victory in one hour and 38 minutes. The duo crucially saved five of the seven break points it faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Zverev will aim to continue his singles campaign in Miami on Monday when he will face Marin Cilic in the fourth round.
King and Peers will next face third seeds Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski. The Australian Open champions triumphed against singles standouts in their opening match on Sunday when they eased past Australians Alex de Minaur and Rinky Hijikata 6-2, 6-3 in 56 minutes.
In other first-round doubles action on Sunday, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos outlasted Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler 6-4, 5-7, 10-5. The top seeds will next face Frenchmen Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti, who defeated Luke Johnson and Jan Zielinski 6-4, 7-6(2).
Fourth seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten also advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Andre Goransson and Alex Michelsen. They will next play Santiago Gonzalez and David Pel, who rallied past Luciano Darderi and Fernando Romboli 7-6(3), 6-2, 10-8.
