The NJ PBS digital documentary series “21” examines a simple question: Does where you live in the state affect how you live? The “21” series profiles one person in each of New Jersey’s 21 counties and looks at the social determinants that affect that person’s life.
This special edition of NJ Spotlight News with Briana Vannozzi shares inspiring stories from Essex, Hudson and Camden counties.
Shayla Cabrera started her entrepreneurial career with a small business called Tia Planta in Hudson County, that is rooted in community, inclusion and education. Today, her business is blossoming beyond house plants and she is one of the only women in the state with a license to grow cannabis. Representation in the recreational marijuana space is personal for Cabrera, as her father remains incarcerated for selling cannabis years ago.
In Essex County, Fallon Davis redefines what it means to be a community leader. Davis is a proud, self-defined “radical educator” developing tools, resources and space for the next generation of innovators through expressive arts and science programs for all ages.
In Camden County, Karanveer Pannu is a young community leader and the first Sikh member of the Voorhees Township Zoning board. With an eye on a future in public service, he leads by example through his faith and work as a bullying prevention specialist with a special focus on supporting diversity and tolerance.
