From May 21 to 31, 2026, InlanDimensions International Arts Network will serve as the producer of the Japanese Contemporary Arts Retrospective at the Craiova International Shakespeare Festival
The Craiova International Shakespeare Festival is one of the premier international theater festivals in Central and Eastern Europe, held biennially in Romania. It stands as a globally significant performing arts event dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare. Since its founding in 1994, with bases in Craiova and Bucharest, the festival has drawn directors, actors, researchers, and audiences from around the world. Past participants have included leading contemporary theater directors such as Yukio Ninagawa, Declan Donnellan, Silviu Purcărete, Robert Wilson, Eimuntas Nekrošius, and Thomas Ostermeier. The festival is highly regarded for its innovative interpretations of classical works and its bold presentation of modern expressions that cross diverse languages, cultures, and aesthetics. The International Shakespeare Festival returns to Craiova, Romania, for its 15th edition under the theme WILL Matters. For 11 days, the city transforms into an open stage where theatre, music, visual arts, and new technologies engage with Shakespeare’s living legacy. Over 450 performances and events take place across more than 60 venues, featuring artists from over 40 countries, and attracting an expected audience of 250,000 participants.
InlanDimensions International Arts Network is an international and interdisciplinary platform that builds bridges across countries and cultures, unbound by continental divisions. Spanning theater, performance, dance, film, music, literature, and visual arts, it connects artists and audiences worldwide to foster new spaces for creation and dialogue. Beyond curation and production, the network actively supports the international development of artists and works—securing overseas performance opportunities, festival invitations and bookings, and negotiating conditions to enable the global circulation of artistic projects. While centering on art from the postwar to postmodern eras, it focuses not on a break from tradition but on its transformation and ongoing influence in the contemporary world. By highlighting the Eurasian concept of art where multicultural elements intersect, it opens new artistic horizons that transcend genres and regions.
The 2026 program places a strong spotlight on cutting-edge expressions from Japan. Theater company KAKUSHINHAN will open the festival with their production Titus Andronicus: Reborn, delivering a powerful statement of Japanese performing arts at an event that welcomes participants from over 40 countries. This marks the company’s first overseas performance. Drawing on their distinctive approach to Shakespeare and combining it with bold direction and innovative stage design, they will offer international audiences a striking theatrical experience.

In the music program, GEZAN—a leading force in Japan’s alternative scene—will perform. Since its formation in 2009, GEZAN has made a major impact on live scenes both in Japan and abroad through its unique fusion of noise, post-punk, and hip-hop. Their radical, provocative performances overwhelm audiences visually and sonically, presenting the forefront of musical expression and creating a dynamic contrast with the theater lineup.

Additionally, Kaimaku Pennant Race will stage their acclaimed work Hamlet | Toilet. Founded in 2006 by Yu Murai, the company has earned strong international recognition, including performances in New York and recently in India (Kerala). Renowned for visually intense and provocative direction—such as a monumental stage set constructed from 10,000 rolls of toilet paper and characters appearing in space suits—they leave a lasting impression. This presentation will once again showcase KPR’s surreal and innovative worldview on the global stage, highlighting the diversity and avant-garde spirit of contemporary Japanese performing arts.
Another highlight is the visit of renowned Hong Kong theatre director Danny Yung. Known for his artistic collaborations with Makoto Sato and Hiroshi Koike, Yung’s participation will open possibilities for new joint creations with Japanese artists. The program will also feature film screenings and symposia, expanding beyond the stage to present multifaceted expressions of contemporary art.
The Japanese Contemporary Arts Retrospective offers a valuable and powerful opportunity to introduce the innovation, diversity, and vitality of contemporary Japanese performing arts to the international stage.
