With just a few days left to go until the special February 5 Democratic primary, Analilia Mejia is bringing one last national progressive name into the race for the 11th congressional district: Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts).
“Analilia isn’t afraid to take on corporate power,” Warren said in a statement endorsing Mejia. “She led the fight for a $15 minimum wage in New Jersey and won paid sick days for hundreds of thousands of workers across the state. She’s running to un-rig our economy, make billionaires pay their fair share, and guarantee healthcare and childcare for every family. Early voting has already started, so if you are in NJ-11, vote for Analilia Mejia by Thursday, February 5th. We need Analilia in Congress.”
Warren joins Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, among other leading progressives, in supporting Mejia; a number of out-of-state allies like Reps. Ro Khanna (D-California) and Adriano Espaillat (D-New York) will be coming into the district this coming week to campaign with her.
One of Mejia’s rivals, meanwhile, has picked up a handful of new endorsements from local elected officials. Former Rep. Tom Malinowski announced yesterday that Madison Mayor Bob Conley, Madison Councilmembers Tom Haralampoudis, Melissa Honohan, and Bob Landrigan, and South Orange Councilwomen Jen Greenberg and Olivia Lewis-Chang are all supporting him; South Orange Mayor Sheena Collum was one of Malinowski’s earliest endorsers.
“The devastation and heartbreak we are seeing right now from ICE’s actions are not who we are in Madison, and they’re not who we are in Morris County,” Conley said. “That’s why it is so crucial we send the right representative to Washington to meet this moment. Tom truly has a proven track record. He has represented New Jersey in Congress, and he has represented us well. Don’t believe those negative ads on TV.”
And Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill (D-Montclair) received an endorsement yesterday from Montclair native Jim Johnson, a former Under Secretary of the Treasury and the runner-up in the 2017 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
“We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history,” Johnson said. “Brendan brings communities together to stand up against extremism and defend our shared values. He knows our neighbors, he listens to their concerns, and he leads in a way that builds trust and unity when it matters most.”
