Giants general manager Joe Schoen knows who he wants.
As the Giants’ head coach search continues, Ian O’Connor of The Athletic reports that Schoen has been ‘relentless’ in his pursuit of John Harbaugh.
“I’m told Giants GM Joe Schoen has had direct contact with John Harbaugh and that those talks have been positive,” O’Connor reported on Saturday. “Long way to go, but Schoen has been a relentless, John Calipari-level recruiter on this one, which likely speaks to his willingness to work with JH on the roster.”
Harbaugh quickly became a prime target for the Giants after the Ravens fired him on Tuesday. He has not yet conducted any interviews with any teams.
Harbaugh, 63, has a 180-113 regular season record and is 13-11 in the postseason. His 180 wins rank 14th all-time and his 13 playoff wins are tied for seventh.
The Ravens won a Super Bowl under Harbaugh in the 2012 season but haven’t returned since.
Former Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is also high on the Giants’ list, and he interviewed with the team on Wednesday (1/7).
On Thursday (1/8), the Giants had interviews scheduled with former Falcons coach Raheem Morris and Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. They interviewed former Raiders coach Antonio Pierce on Friday (1/9).
The Giants will interview former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy on Tuesday (1/13).
The Giants also have interviews planned with Lou Anarumo (Colts defensive coordinator), Kliff Kingsbury (ex-Commanders offensive coordinator), Klint Kubiak (Seahawks offensive coordinator), Davis Webb (Broncos passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach) and Darren Rizzi (Broncos assistant head coach and special teams coordinator).
