U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were seen outside a Union City church Sunday morning where they apparently took two men into custody in an incident that a New Jersey congressman said he is investigating.
U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez, D-8th Dist., said on X that he was “aware of concerning reports of an ICE raid conducted in Union City this morning outside a church. We are working with local officials and community members to learn more details, which will inform next steps.”
Menendez’s district represents Union City.
A Facebook video shot from a nearby residence shows several uniformed ICE agents taking two men in to custody in the street outside the church on 19th Street in Union City.
The video’s caption said six cars with masked ICE agents stopped outside and apprehended the men who appeared to be in their twenties as they were walking toward the church.
ICE officials immediately respond to requests for comment. Union City officials could not be reached for comment.
According to the U.S. Census, 81% of the 66,559 people living in Union City in 2020 are Hispanic.
