The top teams in North 1, Group 3 converged on Toms River on Friday with sectional championships — and berths in the Group Championships — on the line.
The competition lived up to the hype, as Morris Hills on the boys’ side and Ramapo on the girls’ side rose to the occasion, each successfully defending their sectional crowns.
Below is a complete breakdown of the action from North 1, Group 3.
Knapp captures two titles in the distance
Roxbury senior Amanda Knapp delivered a sectional performance to remember, leaving with two individual titles in dominant fashion.
Knapp opened her day by separating herself from a deep field in the 1,600 meters, cruising to victory in 5:18.10. She later returned to the track and controlled the 3,200 from the opening laps, pulling away to secure her second title of the meet in 11:26.65.
The double victory capped a strong senior season for Knapp in the distance events. She claimed the Morris County title in the 3,200 earlier this year, setting a personal-best 11:09.92 — a mark that ranks 11th in the state this season.
Knapp has also been consistently near the top of the podium in the 1,600, posting two runner-up finishes and two third-place efforts, including a bronze at the Morris County Championships. In addition, she owns a personal-best 2:32.75 in the 800, earned with a second-place finish at the Christa Racine Invitational.
Williams secures 55-meter dash title
Teaneck senior Joshua Williams put his sprinting ability on full display, capturing the 55‑meter dash title with a strong finish in the finals.
Williams opened the meet by clocking a 6.83 to place third in the preliminary round, then raised his level when it mattered most. Exploding out of the blocks in the final, he took control early and powered through the line in 6.61 to secure the championship.
Williams entered the meet owning a personal best of 6.52, a time that earned him the Big North National Division crown and is tied for 11th in New Jersey this season.
In addition to his sprint title, Williams showcased his versatility by earning a medal in the high jump. He placed fifth after clearing 5 feet, 10 inches on his second attempt, just shy of his personal‑best clearance of 6‑0.
