MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa has lifted its shelter-in-place order after it said a threat was made against it on Wednesday.
The threat comes after a suspicious package was left near the gate at the Dale Mabry Highway entrance on Monday.
The package was cleared by police later that day, but by Tuesday, MacDill elevated its security level to Force Protection Charlie, or “FPCON CHARLIE,” the second-highest military security level. Such levels are raised as a threat escalates or if an attack has occurred, according to the U.S. Army.
“We take all threats seriously and are taking appropriate measures to prioritize the safety and security of our installation,” MacDill said in a statement. “As a matter of policy, we will not release specifics on what security measures have been implemented.”
As of noon Wednesday, MacDill was still in elevated security status, entering its 18th hour, which the base said allows it “to implement deliberate security measures proactively.”
The shelter-in-place order was in effect for about two hours.
MacDill is one of several bases nationwide that have been on a heightened security alert since the U.S. began bombing Iran, including U.S. Northern Command at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs.
