A man has been arrested in Texas after a shooting in Plant City left one person dead over the weekend, Hillsborough deputies said.
At about 4 a.m. Sunday, deputies received reports that “an individual had been shot multiple times” at the intersection of the Interstate 4 entrance ramp and Branch Forbes Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies who responded to the scene found a man dead.
Detectives determined the shooting “stemmed from an earlier disturbance involving several individuals at a nearby bar,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release Wednesday.
“The individuals later encountered each other again at a gas station, where eventually the situation escalated which led to the shooting at the intersection of Branch Forbes Road and Interstate 4,” the news release states.
On Monday, investigators determined the suspect, Maico Carbajal, had fled Hillsborough County and was traveling west on Interstate 10. Carbajal, 36, was tracked through Alabama and Louisiana into Texas, where he was arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail in Anahuac. He faces a charge of first-degree murder and is awaiting extradition to Hillsborough County.
“You cannot outrun justice,” Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the news release. “Our detectives worked tirelessly, crossing state lines and coordinating with our partners to ensure this suspect was taken into custody.”
The sheriff’s office did not identify the man who was shot, and no further information was released.
