A quick coating of snow and light flurries are in the forecast for the northern half of the New Jersey on Saturday night as temperatures remain cold across the state.
“A very cold start to the day, and the cold conditions will continue right into early next week,” the National Weather service said early Saturday. “A weak system moving nearby tonight could produce some light snow mostly north of I-78. Any snow accumulation will be limited to a coating.”
The colder temperatures and potential for precipitation could create slick spots on untreated surfaces heading into early Sunday, the weather service said.
Conditions will remain dry but chilly during the day Saturday, with temperatures right around freezing across much of the state.
By tonight, temperatures are forecast to drop into the 20s, with teens possible in northwestern New Jersey as the weak clipper system moves through with light snow.
Any lingering precipitation should clear by daybreak on Sunday.
Winds are expected to increase during the day, with gusts up to 25 mph possible.
While high temperatures will remain in the 30s, the wind will make it feel significantly colder.
Monday will see high pressure building briefly before shifting offshore, keeping high temperatures in the 30s.
A weak system sliding to the north could bring another round of light snow to the far northern areas of the state late Monday afternoon or Monday night.
By Tuesday, New Jersey should finally start to see a break from the cold snap as temperatures to rise into the 40s.
A more complex weather pattern develops Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.
As a cold front approaches, there is a potential for light precipitation particularly across northern New Jersey, where freezing rain cannot be ruled out during the overnight hours.

By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to climb well above average, reaching the 40s to mid-50s before a cold front crosses the area later in the day.
Following a brief return of high pressure on Thursday, a warm front arriving from the southwest on Friday could bring increased cloudiness, chances of rain, and high temperatures nearing 60 degrees.
