Snow continues to fall across New Jersey on Sunday afternoon with some towns already reporting 2 inches of snowfall with more on the way.
The highest snowfall totals as of around 1:30 p.m. were reported in Franklin Lakes in Bergen County and Metuchen in Middlesex County, according to the National Weather Service.
A midday lull in the snow should give way to the heaviest snowfall expected this afternoon as a coastal storm moves closer to the region, the weather service said.
Another 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall in the afternoon round of precipitation.
Total accumulations of 2 to 5 inches of snow are expected across much of New Jersey, with the highest amounts in a corridor from central to northern New Jersey.
Winter weather advisories remain in effect for parts of 17 New Jersey counties. Most expire at 8 p.m., but for northeastern counties, the advisories run until midnight.
The latest weekend storm comes after parts of the state already got hit with 3 to 5 inches of snow on Saturday.
Southern counties along the Jersey Shore have seen mostly rain from the first round of precipitation that started this morning, but falling temperatures could bring some snow to those areas.
Cold air will filter in, allowing for a changeover to snow in southern and eastern areas between 3 and 6 p.m., the weather service said.
The last of the snow should move out quickly after 7 to 8 p.m., with temperatures rapidly dropping overnight.
Any untreated surfaces could see some refreezing and become slick after the snow departs.
