MANILA, Philippines — The FIFA World Cup 2026 Final is proving to be an even bigger spectacle following the additions of more celebrity guests to an already star-studded lineup.
Pop stars Madonna and Shakira (with African singer Burna Boy), as well as K-pop boy band BTS, were already confirmed to perform during the halftime show at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19 (early morning of the 20th in the Philippines).
The halftime show, curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, will also feature conductor Gonzalo Dudamel, the PS22 Chorus, and a special appearance by the Muppets.
Another pop star, Justin Bieber, was later announced to be a halftime performer, leading to talks that the halftime break would reach up to 30 minutes rather than the standard 15 — another questionable decision by the organizing body should that fall through.
Before kickoff of the final match, FIFA will host a closing ceremony that will celebrate the 48 participating countries and the 16 host cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The ceremony will feature the Filipino-American leader of the Pussycat Dolls Nicole Scherzinger, British music icon Robbie Williams, Italian singer Laura Pausini, content creator IShowSpeed, and a special appearance by Hollywood star Tom Cruise.
Award-winning artist Jennifer Hudson has been tapped to perform the national anthem of the United States ahead of the final.
“The closing ceremony will bring the tournament full circle through music, culture and football, before we kick off the highly anticipated match that will crown the champions of this groundbreaking tournament,” said this year’s World Cup chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi in a statement.
European champions Spain defeated tournament favorite France and now await the victor between England and defending champions Argentina.
The remaining semifinal is already historic given the rivalry between England and Argentina, highlighted by the 1986 World Cup match, where Argentine legend Diego Maradona scored two distinct goals against the English.
Whoever faces Spain in the final will again be feast for football fans. Copa American champions Argentina was supposed to face Spain in the cancelled 2026 Finalissima, while England lost to Spain two years ago at the Euros.
