Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill (D-Montclair) got an endorsement today from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the biggest and most influential unions to get behind his campaign for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district thus far.
With a month to go until the February 5 special Democratic primary to replace Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill, Gill held a get out the vote rally in Montclair last night featuring Teamsters Joint Council 73 President Al Rispoli, as well as other prominent Gill backers like Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo and Essex Democratic Chairman LeRoy Jones.
“At a time when workers face attacks on their rights, rising costs of living, and growing economic pressures, we need leaders in Congress who will stand with labor,” Rispoli said in a statement today. “Brendan Gill has consistently shown that he will be that kind of leader – someone who listens to workers, fights for strong union protections, and ensures that the people who do the hard work in our communities are not left behind.”
Gill has previously gotten endorsements from a number of other major New Jersey unions, among them the Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, the Hotel Trades Council, the Amalgamated Transit Union State Council, and many others. The only other candidate in the 12-way Democratic primary who has come close to matching Gill’s labor backing is Analilia Mejia, herself a former labor organizer for 32BJ and SEIU.
