A pick-up truck was taken into evidence after it struck and killed a pedestrian in Volusia County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
At approximately 5:59 p.m., a 2021 Ford F-550 was traveling eastbound on State Road 40 approaching Booth Road in the outside lane, FHP said. A 32-year-old man from Ormond Beach was walking westbound on the eastbound outside paved shoulder just west of Booth Road.
The 44-year-old driver from Daytona Beach drifted from the outside lane onto the outside paved shoulder, FHP said. As a result, the front right of the pick-up truck struck the pedestrian.
After the crash, the driver stopped briefly in a nearby parking lot, FHP said. During the investigation FHP made contact with the driver and the vehicle. The driver advised he believed he struck an animal in the roadway and then drove home.
FHP said the pedestrian was pronounced dead on-scene. The pick-up truck was taken into evidence.
This crash remains under investigation.
