Carlos Alcaraz’s shock early exit at the Miami Open presented by Itau could have implications further down the road when it comes to the Spaniard’s status as World No. 1.
The 22-year-old finished the ‘Sunshine Double’ events in Indian Wells and Miami with a 5-2 record after Sebastian Korda prevailed 6-3, 6-4 in the pair’s third-round clash on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. By falling to defeat in Florida, Alcaraz has offered a chance to his great Lexus ATP Head2Head rival and World No. 2 Jannik Sinner to close the gap in the battle for top spot in the PIF ATP Rankings.
Alcaraz remains 2,140 points clear of Sinner in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. However, Sinner is still alive in the Miami draw and could close that gap to just 1,240 points by going on to lift his third consecutive ATP Masters 1000 crown. Sinner would have had the chance to gain even greater ground on his rival but for the fact that Alcaraz was defending just 10 points this year in Miami, after David Goffin upset the Spaniard in the second round a year ago. The second-seeded Sinner takes on 30th seed Corentin Moutet for a fourth-round berth on Monday.

The significance of Alcaraz’s early exit on the battle for World No. 1 is amplified given the amount of points the Spaniard has to defend in the coming months. Across the upcoming European clay swing, he will be the defending 4,300 points, after he last year triumphed at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome and at Roland Garros, while he also reached the final at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. In contrast, Sinner has just 1,850 points to defend, and none until Rome in May.
Despite Alcaraz’s s status as World No. 1 being under threat from Sinner in the medium term, the Spaniard will before then establish a lead over his great rival in total weeks at No. 1. The Spaniard is set to match Sinner’s 66-week milestone in early April, regardless of whether Sinner goes on to lift the Miami trophy or not.
