Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio keeps opponents up at night.
Most coaches can’t say that.
“(49ers head coach) (Kyle) Shanahan has publicly said it and (Rams head coach) (Sean) McVay tells me often, they lay awake at night thinking of Vic Fangio,” ESPN’s Peter Schrager said this week on First Take. “That man is a genius.”
Once again, Shanahan could struggle sleeping as his team prepares to face Fangio on Sunday in the wild-card round at Lincoln Financial Field.
The 49ers have great offensive talent, but Fangio is so good at taking away top players. He can outsmart Shanahan, which is an impossible task for most defensive coordinators.
Fangio works with great players, too, making his job even easier.
The Eagles finished the year 13th in total defense, eighth in passing and fifth in scoring. They struggled against the run, ranking 22nd in the league.
While the numbers are not elite, Philadelphia’s defense is peaking right now and could be the most dangerous unit in the NFL during the playoffs.
For the Eagles to make another Super Bowl run, Fangio will have to out coach Shanahan this week and possibly McVay next week. No one is more capable.
