A new martial arts academy recently celebrated its grand opening in Clark.
Kombat Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu opened at 152 Central Ave. with a celebration that included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, food and special classes for children.
“It had been in the back of my mind to open an academy. You need courage to do something like this and you need to find the right place. For me, it all fell into place,” owner and instructor Helio Desa said. “After much consideration and encouragement, I took a step forward and … it’s been great. The Clark community has been so accepting.”
Desa began training in jiu jitsu at age 9 under Team Clube de Jiu-Jitsu Pitbull in Brazil.
His competitive achievements include multiple Pan-American Championship titles, an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championship, and a bronze medal at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
The academy distinguishes itself through its community-focused approach, according to Desa.
Desa emphasized that passion for jiu jitsu drives the academy rather than financial gain. Students earn their ranks through dedication rather than purchasing advancement, he said.
The academy welcomes all levels, whether interested in self-defense, competition, or recreation, and aims to create a supportive environment for both adults and children.
