The replacement of a balky century-old bridge in the Meadowlands is causing a month of aggravation for thousands of commuters who rely on New Jersey Transit trains. Amtrak and NJ Transit say the new Portal Bridge will put an end to one cause of back-ups on the Northeast Corridor, the nation’s busiest passenger rail route.
Right now, the bridge work is the most visible phase of Amtrak’s $16 billion Gateway rail-improvement project. Though progress has been stymied by President Donald Trump’s funding freeze, Gov. Mikie Sherrill and her New York counterpart, Kathy Hochul, point to court victories that set the money flowing again — and they vow to challenge his administration’s every attempt to delay.
Here’s a primer on where Gateway stands on the way to its 2038 completion.
