The familiar London Stadium rush for the exit has never been so misjudged. A lot of West Ham fans decided they had seen enough when Dominic Calvert-Lewin put Leeds within touching distance of a first FA Cup semi-final since 1987, but how wrong they were. The non-believers reckoned without their side forcing extra time with a wild fightback from 2-0 down and were not allowed back in to see a ridiculously game go the distance.
It ended with Finlay Herrick, a 20-year-old goalkeeper whose experience of senior football extended no further than 10 games during a loan spell with National League side Boreham Wood earlier this season, coming on for his West Ham debut after Alphonse Areola went down injured. Talk about a baptism of fire. Soon West Ham’s No 4 goalkeeper was in a penalty shootout. To add to the mix, it took place at the West Ham end amid unconfirmed suggestions that those in charge of stadium security did not want the kicks taken in front of the 9,000 travelling Leeds.
That’s all for today’s coverage. We’ll have Jacob Steinberg’s match report on the site shortly. Thanks for your company, goodnight!
Chelsea v Leeds, eh.
FA Cup semi-final draw
The semi-final draw will take place around 7.55pm. These are the all-important ball numbers.
Southampton
Chelsea
Manchester City
Leeds United
Full time: West Ham 2-2 Leeds (2-4 pens)
That was so much fun. A leaping Lucas Perri punches the air in front of the away fans. He started the game with a stunning save to deny Taty Castellanos and finished it by keeping out penalties from Jarrod Bowen and Pablo.
Struijk scores and Leeds go through!
West Ham 2-4 Leeds Struijk whips a penalty that hits the inside of the post and goes into the net. After a mildly bonkers game, Leeds are in their first FA Cup semi-final since 1987!
Lucas Perri saves from Pablo!
West Ham 2-3 Leeds Leeds are one kick away! Lucas Perri dives to his right and keeps out an imperfect penalty from Pablo. It was well struck but nowhere near the corner.
Gnonto scores!
West Ham 2-3 Leeds Gnonto scores… just! Herrick got a hand to it, diving to his right, but it was whacked high into the net.
Soucek scores!
West Ham 2-2 Leeds Tomas Soucek, who scored twice in penalty competitions for the Czech Republic during the international break, does so again. An emphatic penalty, the best so far.
Aaronson scores!
West Ham 1-2 Leeds Herrick dives the wrong way for the first time in the shootout. Good penalty, very similar to Walker-Peters’
Walker-Peters scores!
West Ham 1-1 Leeds Another good penalty, placed carefully to the right. Lucas Perri went the wrong way.
Calvert-Lewin scores!
West Ham 0-1 Leeds Good penalty, clipped over the diving Herrick.
Lucas Perri saves Bowen’s penalty!
West Ham 0-0 Leeds Another tame penalty, low to the right, and once Lucas Perri guessed correctly he was always likely to save it.
Herrick saves Piroe’s penalty!
West Ham 0-0 Leeds It was a poor penalty. Herrick dived the right way, to his right, and kept it out.
Leeds will go first, Joel Piroe to be precise.
A number of players who scored penalties for West Ham and Leeds in their earlier shootouts are not on the field. But these men are:
West Ham Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek
Leeds Brenden Aaronson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Joel Piroe
ICYMI, West Ham have just brought on Fin Herrick, a 20-year-old goalkeeper making his first-team debut, because of an injury to Alphonse Areola. It’ll be a unique FA Cup story if his saves take West Ham to the last four.
Full time in extra time: West Ham 2-2 Leeds
Well of course it’s going to penalties.
120+5 min: West Ham substitution Ezra Mayers replaces Adama, who has had a cracking game. Both teams have now made six substitutions.
120+3 min “This game kicked off very nearly three hours ago!” says Andrew Goudie.
And my post-match walk along the beach started about an hour ago.
120+2 min Bijol tries to usher the bal through to Lucas Perri but Kante is all over him. Eventually Bijol has to do something and knocks it vaguely away from goal, allowing Lucas Perri to dive on the ball. It wasn’t a backpass.
120+1 min Five added minutes, and then penalties.
120 min: West Ham substitution It must be more than cramp because Areola can barely stand up. He’s replaced by the debutant goalkeeper Fin Herrick, who was three months old when West Ham last played in an FA Cup semi-final.
118 min Herrick has his tracksuit off and is ready to go if needed. Goalkeepers can’t really lose in penalty shootouts, so this could be the start of an FA Cup fairytale.
117 min Areola is still down. The sub keeper is 20-year-old Fin Herrick, who has never played for the first team. He was on loan at Boreham Wood earlier in the season.
116 min I’m not sure I’ve seen a goalkeeper struggling with cramp before. “I’ve seen it all,” says Ally McCoist on TNT Sports.
115 min An overhit cross from Gruev clears the leaping Areola, who hurts his ankle when he lands. Actually I think it’s cramp.
113 min Bijol makes a last-ditch tackle on Pablo in the area, but then runs the ball past his own keeper Lucas Perri. No need for the theme from Curb Your Enthusiasm: there’s enough time for Bijol to clear his head and boot the ball away.
111 min The substitute Kante muscles past Bijol, veers outside Bornauw in the area but then slices wide with his left foot. Not a bad chance.
109 min Both teams won a penalty competition en route to the semi-finals, West Ham v Brentford and Leeds v Birmingham.
108 min Pablo is late on Bijol, who has been in the wars all day. No yellow card.
106 min Both teams have made half-time substitutions.
West Ham Mohamadou Kante and Oliver Scarles for Taty Castellanos and El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Leeds Joel Piroe for Jayden Bogle.
Half time in extra time: West Ham 2-2 Leeds
Justin’s free-kick is a stinker and goes behind for a goal kick. Peep peep!
105+2 min Walker-Peters pulls back Gnonto and is booked. Free-kick to Leeds just outside the area on the left wing…
105+1 min It’s level on attempts at goal as well: West Ham 20-20 Leeds.
105 min Bogle is excellently challenged on the edge of the area by Diouf and West Ham are off on the break. Adama slaloms this way and that before finding the overlapping Diouf… who slices a weary, ill-conceived shot wide of the near post.
104 min Justin’s long free-kick from the halfway line is well claimed by Areola.
101 min: Bowen hits the post again!
Bowen receives a short pass 25 yards from goal and launches an spectacular shot that thumps off the inside of the post. The ball runs loose and is turned in by Pablo – but he was well offside when Bowen took the shot. Both Nuno Espirito Santo and Danny Dyer were off celebrating, oblivious to the fact the flag had gone up.
100 min: Vital save by Lucas Perri! Fernandes breaks into the area on the right and forces as short cross towards Castellanos, whose close-range shot is bravely blocked by Lucas Perri. I think it hit him in the face.
99 min Gruev charges forward with purpose, only to shoot wastefully wide from a tight angle. A cross to Calvert-Lewin was the better option.
95 min At the other end, Walker-Peters’ low drive goes through the legs of a defender and is held by the diving Lucas Perri. Decent save.
93 min: Souceck clears off the line!
Bogle’s driven cross into the six-yard box is half cleared by Walker-Peters, facing his own goal. Gnonto follows up with a low shot that gets through Areola and is kicked off the line by Soucek.
Brilliant from Soucek and also Walker-Peters, who had to intervene with a Leeds player waiting behind him to score.
NO GOAL! West Ham 2-2 Leeds
Castellanos was offside when the ball was lumped forward by Diou, so the goal is ruled out. Yikes.
