The basics:
- ButACake debuts its first THC beverage in New Jersey
- Cherry Hibiscus Elixir features fast-acting 5mg THC
- Partnership with Azuca supports product development
- Available at multiple dispensaries with statewide expansion planned
Canna-bakery brand ButACake is launching its first canned THC beverage in New Jersey dispensaries.
Developed in partnership with edible cannabis ingredients company Azuca, ButACake’s ready-to-drink Cherry Hibiscus Elixir is billed as a non-carbonated beverage that delivers “reliable, repeatable effects with greater control over timing and dosage.”
According to ButACake and Azuca, each 7.5-fluid-ounce serving contains 5mg THC. It has a fast-acting onset of between five to 15 minutes, the partners said. In addition to clean-label ingredients, such as hibiscus extract, natural cherry flavor and organic sugar cane, the compliant cannabis beverages are made with cannabis sourced in New Jersey.
It can be enjoyed chilled, over ice or mixed into sparkling water or mocktails. A second flavor, Peach Elixir, will roll out in coming weeks, the partners said.
ButACake Cherry Hibiscus Elixir is now available at:
- Shipwreck’d – Neptune City
- Urb’n Dispensary – Newark
- Shore House Canna – West Cape May
- Valley Wellness – Raritan
- Township Green – Riverside
- Premo Cannabis – Keyport
- Daylite Dispensary – Mount Laurel
- Bud 2 Bloom – Netcong
Additional retail expansion is expected as distribution grows across the state, they said.
Farmers market foundation
Founded in 2016 as a baked treats company, ButACake began with pastry chef Matha Figaro selling non-infused cakes and sauces at farmers markets in Jersey City. After building a loyal following through scratch-made sweets, the woman-owned and minority-owned brand transitioned into New Jersey’s regulated market.
The business went on to become one of the state’s pioneering infused baked-goods manufacturers.
Figaro also formed CannPowerment, a contract manufacturing, packaging and production solution for cannabis brands looking to hit the shelves of stores. Since 2023, the venture is the state’s only black woman-owned operational manufacturer.
She has a longstanding partnership with Azuca. In 2024, the New York-based company named Figaro as its inaugural social equity fellow.
As part of the program, Azuca worked with Figaro and her team to help them gain a competitive edge in the market through ingredient and formulation support, advisory access and opportunity to scale the business and boost sales.
‘New kind of energy’
According to the partners, the collaboration culminates with the commercial launch of the new THC drinks following a successful pilot last year. They noted that the products are manufactured by CannPowerment.
Commenting on the rollout, Figaro said, “For ButACake, it’s always been about flavor and premium experience. Working with the Azuca team has been a huge part of that. They continue to help us push the envelope in the fast-acting space and develop products that are both functional and genuinely enjoyable. This drink is an extension of that vision, something that feels elevated but easy, and brings a new kind of energy to how people engage with cannabis.”
Azuca co-founder and CEO Kim Sanchez Rael added, “This is the first of its kind available in the state’s dispensaries, and it sets a new standard for how these products should perform—predictable, controlled, and consistent in a format consumers already understand.”
