Two people are facing charges after a 1-month-old boy died in their care this week, St. Petersburg police said Friday.
Gabriella Daniels, 22, and Ashton Kurant, 21, were arrested Thursday on charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect, the police department said in a news release. The infant had been taken to a hospital for medical care on Thursday, and he later died. Further investigation showed the boy had “bruises along his hairline and multiple lacerations throughout his body.”
“Due to the confidential nature of the case, no information identifying the child will be released,” the news release states.
Arrest reports state that Daniels called 911 about 11:45 a.m. Thursday after finding that her 1-month-old child was unresponsive. Despite resuscitation efforts, the child was pronounced dead at 12:26 p.m.
The reports state that the Florida Department of Children and Families “is involved with the family and noted that the child was clear of injuries as of April 10.” The child, according to the reports, was not enrolled in any day care services and lived under the custody of Daniels and Kurant.
“Further charges are pending the results from the autopsy,” the reports state.
Records show Daniels and Kurant were being held Friday at the Pinellas County Jail. Bail was listed at $750,000 each.
