Leading sports and entertainment contractor Barton Malow has been selected to build a $198 million stadium for Detroit-based soccer club Detroit City FC that is expected to double the club’s audience capacity during games.
In a press release posted last week, Detroit City FC said its new home, AlumniFi Field stadium, will serve as a “true community gathering place” that joins together the surrounding Corktown and Mexicantown neighborhoods in southwest Detroit. Architect HOK is handled the stadium’s design.
The team’s current home is the 7,200-person capacity Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck.
“We built Detroit City FC on the belief that a club should reflect and serve its city, and AlumniFi Field is the next chapter in that promise — a home rooted unmistakably in Detroit’s character and authenticity,” said Detroit City FC CEO Sean Mann.
The club added that Barton Malow was the right fit for the job due to the contractor’s “integrated construction delivery” expertise reflected in its work on the neighboring Little Ceasars Arena, completed in 2017. The contractor is also serving as construction manager on the ongoing Jacksonville Jaguars’ Stadium of the Future project in a joint venture with AECOM Hunt.
“This project represents everything we stand for—technical excellence, self-perform strength, and a genuine commitment to the communities where we build,” said Barton Malow Senior Vice President Sean Hollister said in the release. “We are proud to bring AlumniFi Field to life for Detroit City FC and for the city of Detroit.”
Site preparation for the stadium, which is expected to have a 15,000-seat capacity, began in December with the demolition of an abandoned hospital. According to the club, the project also includes an adjacent 421-space parking deck and roughly 16,000 square feet of commercial space and 76 apartment units.
Officials with the club said they are aiming for the stadium to be ready by the club’s 2027 soccer season.
