Now it’s thirteen in a row—but it sure wasn’t easy. The Knicks extended their historic playoff winning streak with a 105–104 victory against the Spurs in Game 2. New York was rolling in the fourth quarter, up fourteen points with just over six minutes to go, when San Antonio began a stretch of intensely physical, lockdown defense and matched it with a run on offense, erasing the lead. In the end, the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama had a clean shot to win it, but it clanged off the back of the rim. Fireworks were going off back in New York.
After the game, the New Yorker editor David Remnick was again joined by the staff writers Louisa Thomas and Vinson Cunningham for a live discussion on Substack. They broke down the Knicks’ narrow escape, did a little complaining about the refs, and pointed out how the Spurs’ collective youth is showing against a more experienced opponent. The series heads to Madison Square Garden, home of the hottest ticket on earth, on Monday night. ♦
