As America celebrates its 250th birthday, I am filled with gratitude, pride, and a deep sense of responsibility.
I was born and raised in Turkey. When I came to the United States, I did not have money, influence, or connections. I spoke very little English. I came with hope, determination, and a belief that in America, if you worked hard and played by the rules, anything was possible.
My first job was at a gas station. It was honest work, and it taught me lessons I still carry today: show up early, work hard, respect every person, and never forget where you came from.
From there, I built a life I could once only dream about. As an Architect, I also became an accountant, earned my CPA, started a successful business, raised a family, and eventually had the honor of serving the people of Morris County as a Commissioner.
Only in America.
To me, the 250th anniversary of our nation is not just a celebration of history. It is a celebration of freedom, opportunity, sacrifice, and the American Dream. It is a reminder that this country remains the greatest nation on Earth because it gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things.
America opened its doors to me. Morris County welcomed me. Now, serving as county commissioner gives me the opportunity to give back.
Every day, I work to help make and keep Morris County the greatest place in the world to live, work, and raise a family. That means supporting strong communities, responsible government, safe neighborhoods, good jobs, quality services, and the values that make our county so special.
As an immigrant, I never take this country for granted. I know freedom is not guaranteed. I know opportunity must be protected. I know the blessings of America were secured by generations of patriots, veterans, first responders, public servants, families, and everyday citizens who believed in something bigger than themselves.
As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, let us fly our flags proudly. Let us teach our children that this nation is worth loving, worth defending, and worth improving. Let us remember that America’s greatness comes not from perfection, but from our constant pursuit of a more perfect Union.
My story is just one small part of the larger American story. But it is proof that the promise of America is still alive.
Happy 250th Birthday, America. Thank you for giving me freedom, opportunity, a home, and the chance to serve.
