Save shaving for after the shower: If you’re shaving all the way down, do it in the shower, or immediately after one. Warm water softens coarse pubic hair and relaxes the skin, leaving the scrotum smoother and much easier to shave than when you’re cold and everything tightens up. Trimming is more forgiving, but a warm shower still makes the job more comfortable.
Go with the grain: For shaving down to the skin, start with a hydrating, lubricating shaving cream, then shave in the direction your hair naturally grows whenever possible. As Dr. Turner recommends, a well-lubricated shave is more comfortable, and going with the grain dramatically reduces your chances of razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
Finish with moisturizer: Whether you trimmed or shaved, apply a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer afterward to help restore the skin barrier and reduce irritation. If you’re prone to chafing, an anti-friction balm is worth adding to your routine.
How We Tested
We’ve been testing and recommending grooming tools for well over a decade, and we revisit this guide multiple times a year to make sure our picks still represent the best pubic hair trimmers you can buy. As new models hit the market, we test them alongside longtime favorites to see if they’re truly an improvement.
When evaluating pubic hair trimmers, we prioritize the features that matter most in real-world use: safer blades and protective guards, intuitive ergonomics, waterproof construction, battery life, and how confidently each trimmer handles different hair lengths without tugging, snagging, or irritating.
We also make a point to test our recommendations across a range of hair types, densities, and grooming habits. Some testers keep things closely maintained, while others tackle weeks of growth at a time.
