Asian Movie Pulse speaks with Hong Kong actress Angela Yuen and director and screenwriter Veronica Bassetto about “Gamer Girls”, the Hong Kong esports drama co-directed by Bassetto and Sophie Yang.
Bassetto discusses how real all-female esports teams in Hong Kong inspired the story and why many talented female players were treated as presenters for gaming products rather than as professional competitors. Yuen explains what attracted her to the role of Summer, how the cast prepared for the gaming sequences and why she would not have wanted Summer as a teammate at the beginning of the story.
They also talk about female friendship, the options available to esports players after retirement, the difficult Evil Eye battle sequence, shooting outdoor cosplay scenes with limited time and resources, and the hopeful meaning of the final run through Hong Kong.
