Key events
25th over: Ireland 102-2 (Hunter 37, Prendergast 14) Ireland bring up their hundred in the 25th over. England were fifty runs ahead of them at this stage. Time to take some risks.
24th over: Ireland 97-2 (Hunter 36, Prendergast 10) Prendergast picks up two thanks to a misfield at backward point. I think it was Captain Dean who was the culprit. Just three off the over.
23rd over: Ireland 94-2 (Hunter 36, Prendergast 7) Charlie Dean landing it on a sixpence and rattling through her third over. Just two off it. Mady Villiers is coming into the attack for the next over, can she get herself into the wickets once again?
22nd over: Ireland 92-2 (Hunter 35, Prendergast 6) That’s more like it, TCC drops short and is punished on the pull by Hunter. Nine runs in total off the over with a more proactive approach.
21st over: Ireland 83-2 (Hunter 29, Prendergast 3) Charlie Dean is in and out of her over in warp speed, just two off it. The run rate worm rising like an angry cobra…
20th over: Ireland 81-2 (Hunter 29, Prendergast 1) Orla Prendergast joins Hunter and gets off the mark with a single into the off side first ball. Ireland have only hit six boundaries in their innings so far.
WICKET! Alice Tector b Corteen-Coleman 29 (Ireland 80-2)
Bowled! Clever bowling from TCC who sends down a quicker arm ball that uproots Tector’s off stump! It’s been coming, Tector’s was something of a tortured innings, 59 balls for her 29.
19th over: Ireland 74-1 (Tector 27, Hunter 24) Charlie Dean brings herself into the attack, can she get the wickets column shifting for England? Not in her first over but she skids the ball on and is only hit for three singles.
18th over: Ireland 74-1 (Tector 27, Hunter 24) TCC after the drinks break. No rocket fuel in the squash for Ireland who just manage to take three off the over.
17th over: Ireland 71-1 (Tector 26, Hunter 23) Ireland have to step it up after the drinks break, they’ve built a platform with only one wicket lost but the required run rate is already creeping up to 7s.
16th over: Ireland 64-1 (Tector 20, Hunter 22) Another tidy over from Corteen-Coleman, she gets the edge of Hunter’s blade with the first ball but there’s a vacant slip region! D’oh. Get one in there Deano!
15th over: Ireland 59-1 (Tector 19, Hunter 18) Just two runs off Gibson. Ireland on the New Road to nowhere.
14th over: Ireland 57-1 (Tector 18, Hunter 17) England are piling the pressure on Ireland. There have been nearly 60 dot balls in the innings so far, ten overs worth. Just two off TCC’s second over.
13th over: Ireland 55-1 (Tector 17, Hunter 16) Hunter uses her feet to get out to Gibson and drive for four through the covers. Tector at the other end should take note, get those feet moving!
12th over: Ireland 48-1 (Tector 16, Hunter 11) Tilly Corteen-Coleman is summoned for some spin. She settles into her groove straight away, four singles off the over.
This is from Matilda…
Tilly is indeed a Matilda. She was born 13 years after this was made though.
11th over: Ireland 44-1 (Tector 14, Hunter 9) five singles off Gibson, Ireland need to take a few risks, England aren’t under any pressure at all.
10th over: Ireland 39-1 (Tector 12, Hunter 6) Ree Mac has Tector on toast at the moment, moving the ball both ways and the Irish opener can’t lay a bat on it at currently. Powerplay done, Ireland have only lost the one wicket but they haven’t really gone anywhere.
9th over: Ireland 38-1 (Tector 12, Hunter 6) Dani Gibson replaces Filer. Her first ball is right on the money, stump to stump. Most of the over is too but she blots her copybook with the final ball, a smidge too full and Hunter dumps it over long on for four.
8th over: Ireland 34-1 (Tector 12, Hunter 2) Macdonald-Gay moves the first ball away from Hunter and then brings the next one back, how it misses the stumps I do not know! Close again! Another in-ducker sees Hunter inside edge past leg peg. Plenty of action on this white Kookaburra in the air and off the pitch.
7th over: Ireland 30-1 (Tector 11, Hunter 1) Tector latches onto a short ball from Filer and pulls for four. She looks much more at ease with the ball back of a length, with it swinging and pushed up there she looks much more ill at ease.
6th over: Ireland 25-1 (Tector 7, Hunter 0) Good probing over from Macdonald-Gay, she beats Tector’s outside edge a couple of times, the batter has her feet in treacle at the moment.
5th over: Ireland 24-1 (Tector 7, Hunter 0) Amy Hunter is the new batter. Ouchy! Filer greets her with a sharp ball that zips back and thuds into the hip. Filer has the breakthrough and gets a warm round of applause from the English in the crowd.
WICKET! Gaby Lewis c MacDonald-Gay b Filer 16 (Ireland 24-1)
Filer is pulled for four by Lewis and responds by going full with a slower ball that outfoxes the batter but was comfortably heading down leg…
Gone! Filer goes back short with the next and rushes Lewis into a top edged pull, Ryana MG holding a tidy catch down at long leg.
4th over: Ireland 20-0 (Tector 7, Lewis 12) Ryana MG gets some late shape away from Tector who plays and misses with a half hearted prod. England don’t have any slips in despite having a new ball zipping about and the best part of three hundred runs on the board. Riddle me that, Charlie Dean? Two singles off the over.
3rd over: Ireland 18-0 (Tector 6, Lewis 11) A better over from Filer who only goes for a single and completely cuts Lewis in half with a vicious nip backer that goes an inch over middle stump.
2nd over: Ireland 17-0 (Tector 5, Lewis 11) Decent start this by Ireland, they don’t want to be on the end of a quartz blue wash. Gaby Lewis absolutely maaaarmalises a length ball from Ryana Macdonald-Gay into the stands over the leg side for SIX. Some shot that. The ball has to be replaced as it was mangled on a concrete pillar. That’s an early badge of honour for Lewis. She then shows her timing with a classical cover drive for four more. Easy game!
1st over: Ireland 7-0 (Tector 5, Lewis 1) Lauren Filer is punished for sending down a wide ball with her sixth delivery, instead of getting out of her over for the cost of just two runs she has to bowl an extra ball that Tector duly glides with soft hands wide of point for four.
James Wallace
Thanks Tanya and hello all. Can Ireland make a decent fist of this chase? Let’s find out. Lauren Filer has the ball in hand, Alice Tector and Gaby Lewis are in the middle and will open up. Play!
A innings of two parts – bombast from Bouchier and the magnificent Dunkley, tepid water from most of the rest – Gibson and Grewcock excluded. And Capsey was very unlucky. It should still be more than enough to beat Ireland, though they will be boosted by their late resurgence in the field.
Jim will be your guide through Ireland’s chase, thanks for your company – bye!
WICKET! Filer c Hunter b Prenderegast 0 (England 291 all out)
48.5 overs: England 291 (Corteen-Coleman 1) The innings dribbles to a close, as Filer pokers the ball up and into the gloves of Hunter. England have lost six for 31.
WICKET! Gibson run-out 41 (England 290-9)
Out by a football pitch. Charged for a second run off a wide but nowhere near.
48th over: England 288-8 (Gibson 41, Filer 0) Gibson thanks Filer for the offer of a single but says she’s on this.
WICKET! MacDonald-Gay c Murray b Kelly 7 (England 288 -8)
Heaves to long on, a lovely gift for Kelly in her farewell appearance.
