It’s almost time for the 2026 Ironman World Championship, with men and women coming together to share the course for the first time since 2019 in a renewed one-day format. The Big Island is buzzing, and so are we, because there’s nothing like the Super Bowl of triathlon!
The pro start list is set, and fans of triathlon are placing their bets: Can Kat Matthews break her runner-up streak (2025, 2024, and 2022)? Will Kristian Blummenfelt find redemption for his blunders in Kona 2024? Can Taylor Knibb pull off the elusive 70.3 Worlds/Kona double victory? Ironman World Championship Returns to One-Day Kona Format
In April 2025, Ironman announced the Ironman World Championship would return to a one-day format with men and women competing on the Big Island. In 2022, the championship was two days in Kona – one day for men and one for women – but that put too much strain on the locals, requiring another solution.
The next three years involved split-gender championships rotating between Nice and Kona. Returning to a one-day format is what Ironman said surveys showed the triathlon community preferred.
