DoubleTree by Hilton is shuttering its location in Somerset this summer for good.
Property manager Rebel Hotel Co. notified 90 employees at the Atrium Drive hotel and conference center it will let them go when the site closes in August, according to a filing with the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
In a statement to NJBIZ, Rebel Hotel Co. Chief Operating Officer Gary Thomas said, “This was a difficult decision, made after careful consideration of current market conditions and the long-term viability of the property.”
The New York City-based property management firm intends to treat impacted employees “with respect and dignity through this transition,” Thomas said.
“Active outreach is underway with neighboring hotels and job placement agencies to assist associates in finding new employment opportunities,” he went on. The company is also in the process of notifying guests with existing reservations and providing “full assistance with rebooking,” he said.
“Any inconvenience this may cause is sincerely regretted,” Thomas added.
The Somerset hotel is owned by DTS 287 LLC, according to Rebel Hotel Co.
Ending decades in Somerset for DoubleTree
According to Thomas, the DoubleTree by Hilton in Somerset will continue to welcome guests “and provide the same first-class service it as always delivered” up until August.
He also went on to offer “a heartfelt thank you goes to the dedicated team, the surrounding community, and the thousands of guests proudly served over the many decades.”
A Hilton Worldwide brand, the DoubleTree by Hilton offers a full-service hotel geared toward business travelers, conferences and leisure guests. It’s also known for greeting guests with warm, chocolate chip cookies at check-in.
DoubleTree by Hilton holds distinction as one of Hilton’s largest franchise brands. Its footprint of 700 locations worldwide includes 400-plus sites in the U.S. The majority are independently owned and operated under agreements.
In addition to its 364 guest rooms, fitness amenities, on-site restaurant and a Starbucks, the 43-year-old DoubleTree Somerset Hotel and Conference Center features 62,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting space. Over the years, the venue has hosted several NJBIZ events, including its annual Business of the Year program and Women’s Leadership Summit.
Besides Somerset, DoubleTree by Hilton has New Jersey properties in:
- Princeton
- Monroe Township
- Mount Laurel
- Cherry Hill
- Eatontown
- Newark
- Jersey City
- Fairfield
- Fort Lee
- Mahwah
Several other franchised DoubleTree by Hilton locations have recently gone dark, too. Impacted sites include ones in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Memphis and Pittsburgh. Reports tie the closures to financial pressures, weaker business travel demand, fewer event bookings or costly renovation needs.
