Japan’s konbini (convenience stores) are a ubiquitous part of daily life for residents, but the stores have so many overseas admirers that tour operators offer guided jaunts through their brightly lit aisles.
Now, a new game offers the chance to soak in konbini ambience in all its cozy comfort.
Available from April 30, Inkonbini is the debut game by Tokyo-based indie studio Nagai Industries. It puts you in the shoes of Makoto, a college student on summer vacation who is helping out on the night shift at a branch of Honki Ponki, the konbini her aunt runs in an unnamed rural Japanese town during the 1990s. As the balmy shifts roll on, you’ll handle inventory, chat with a small cast of customers and solve simple tasks like fetching the perfect product to help regulars overcome hurdles in their personal lives.
