Joan Burstein CBE, the pioneering retailer and founder of the legendary Browns boutique, has passed away surrounded by her family in Ibiza, shortly after celebrating her 100th birthday.
Affectionately known as Mrs B, Burstein founded the Browns boutique on London’s South Molton Street in 1970 with her late husband Sidney.
Known for her impeccable taste and her unswerving commitment to championing new talent, Mrs B became something of a fashion fairy godmother. She was instrumental in launching the careers of many British designers including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane, among others.

Browns was also one of the first retailers to stock the collections of names, such as Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren in the UK. In 2006, she was awarded the CBE for services to fashion and her husband Sidney passed away in 2010.
The boutique was originally housed at number 27 South Molton Street and at his height, Browns occupied several stores on the street, including a more accessibly priced Browns Focus. For any designer-led fashion brand, securing a presence in Browns was the ultimate validation.
In 2015 the business was acquired by online fashion giant Farfetch and Mrs B officially retired, but remained as honorary chair, while her children Caroline (founder of the Molton Brown fragrance brand) and Simon retained seats on the board.

In 2022, the South Molton street boutiques were closed and relocated to a town house on nearby Brook Street, where it remains today. The business also has an e-commerce site.
Mrs B’s children, Caroline and Simon, issued a statement saying: “We are deeply saddened to share that our wonderful mother, Joan Burstein CBE, passed away peacefully on Friday 17th April 2026 at her home in Ibiza, surrounded by her family.
”Earlier this year, she celebrated her 100th birthday in joyful style – dancing to a swing band and surrounded by those who loved her, which was entirely fitting for a life so vibrantly lived.
“She leaves behind an enormous legacy and will be profoundly missed by her two children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and the many people whose lives she touched.”
