A drunk driver crashed into a utility pole early Sunday in Egg Harbor Township and then fled, leaving behind his seriously injured passenger, authorities said.
Zykyeem Jenkins crashed at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday near the corner of Black Horse Pike and Venice Avenue, Egg Harbor Township police said.
Jenkins then briefly ran off on foot, authorities said. He tried to hide in the bed of a pickup truck whose driver had stopped to check on the crash.
He also tried to steal tools in the bed of the truck before officers found and arrested him, officials said.
Jenkins, a 24-year-old from Manchester, was charged with assault by auto, burglary of a motor vehicle, hindering apprehension and drunk driving. Police also issued him multiple other motor vehicle violations.
Both Jenkins and the passenger, who is also 24, were brought to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries following the crash in the West Atlantic City section of town.
An attorney is not listed for Jenkins in court records.
