The burned body of a woman was found in an apartment room in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, following a fire in the early hours of Saturday, Aichi Prefectural Police said.
An autopsy of the body, discovered in a room on the third floor of the apartment, found that the woman had been strangled.
Investigators are working to identify the victim, believing that someone killed her and then set fire to the room.
Authorities said a resident next door noticed the fire at around 4:40 a.m. Saturday and made an emergency call.
When firefighters rushed to the scene, they found the entrance door locked, so they entered the room via a terrace and discovered the body lying face up.
Police have not been able to contact the woman who lives in the room.
The incident occurred in a residential area roughly 3.5 kilometers west of Nagoya Raiload’s Toyotashi Station.
