A group of labor unions made endorsements in next week’s Newark Council elections, they announced Friday.
The coalition endorsed Josephine Garcia, the chief of staff of outgoing Councilman Carlos Gonzalez, and former Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins, who is challenging Councilwoman Amina Bey in the Central Ward. Growing Economic Opportunities, joined by the Laborers Union, the Carpenters Union, and the Hotel Trades Union, announced the endorsements Friday.
The announcement said union members and volunteers will lead a canvassing “blitz” for the two candidates.
“Newark is at a turning point,” said LIUNA Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager Mike Hellstrom. “By uniting the strength of our local labor unions with grassroots community energy, we are ensuring that the voices of working families are heard at the ballot box. Ms. Chaneyfield Jenkins and Ms. Garcia aren’t just running for office; they are running to ensure Newark’s economic future includes everyone.”
Garcia faces a slew of other candidates in the race for the open at-large council seat.
