How World Cup group standings work
Each World Cup group consists of four teams, with every team playing three matches during the group stage. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. At the conclusion of group play, the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, along with the eight best third-place teams, while the remaining teams are eliminated.
World Cup group stage tiebreakers
If two or more teams finish level on points in the group stage, official tiebreaking rules are used to determine final group positions. These criteria are applied in sequence until teams are separated, with head-to-head results taking priority before overall group performance.
Tiebreakers are applied in the following order:
- Points earned in head-to-head matches between the tied teams
- Goal difference in head-to-head matches between the tied teams
- Goals scored in head-to-head matches between the tied teams
If teams remain tied after applying the head-to-head criteria above, those same criteria are re-applied only to the remaining tied teams. If teams are still level, the following overall group-stage criteria are used:
- Overall goal difference in all group matches
- Overall goals scored in all group matches
- Disciplinary record, based on team conduct scores
- Drawing of lots, conducted by FIFA
How World Cup group standings impact betting
World Cup group standings play a major role in shaping match importance and team approach. Teams that have already secured qualification may rotate lineups, while those needing points or goal difference often push the tempo. Understanding where teams sit in the standings can provide valuable context when evaluating match odds, totals, and player-based markets during the group stage.
Related World Cup odds and futures
World Cup group standings are closely tied to several betting markets throughout the tournament, as qualification position and match importance often shape both pricing and team approach. As the group stage unfolds, standings help explain movement in group winner odds, “to qualify” markets, and knockout-stage futures.
Teams chasing advancement or goal difference may play more aggressively, while those that have already secured qualification could rotate lineups or manage minutes. Tracking group standings alongside these markets provides valuable context for understanding how odds evolve from matchday to matchday and how futures pricing adjusts as the tournament takes shape.

The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage along with the eight best third-place teams based on total points and official tiebreaking criteria.
If teams are tied on points, group positions are determined by points earned in head-to-head matches between the tied teams and then goal difference in head-to-head matches between the tied teams.
In some cases, teams can be mathematically eliminated before their final group match based on results elsewhere in the group.
