The Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA) has announced the return of its Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation, which will travel to Bali, Indonesia, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this June. Supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), the Film Development Fund (FDF), and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), the programme aims to promote Hong Kong cinema through screenings, filmmaker appearances, and cultural exchange events.
A number of filmmakers and artists will attend the events in person, including actors Jeffrey Ngai and Wong Yau-nam, alongside directors Njo Kui Ying, Chou Man Yu, and Jack Lai, offering audiences the opportunity to engage with the creative teams behind the films.
The first stop will take place in collaboration with the Bali International Film Festival from June 1 to 6, presenting six Hong Kong productions spanning science fiction, comedy, action, and youth drama: Ciao UFO, Road to Vendetta, Night King, Golden Boy, Back to the Past, and Gamer Girls. The programme will also feature post-screening Q&A sessions, filmmaker exchanges, and the “Hong Kong Night” industry networking event.
Following Bali, the initiative will continue in Riyadh, where the Academy seeks to broaden local perceptions of Hong Kong cinema beyond its classic action legacy. Alongside recent action films, audiences will also be introduced to works such as Ciao UFO and the crime mystery Behind the Shadows, highlighting the diversity of contemporary Hong Kong filmmaking.
