President Donald Trump on Tuesday tried his best to distance himself from the now-former U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle. But his past comments about her, as recent as earlier this year, painted a very different picture.
After Guilfoyle’s resignation, Trump told reporters outside the White House that she wasn’t a member of his family, despite having been engaged to his eldest son.
“She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago,” Trump said. “She went to Greece. She was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were reading.”
Trump was singing a very different tune about Guilfoyle less than a year ago.
“Kimberly Guilfoyle has been my friend for a long time. I love calling her Kimberly. That’s my little pet name, right?” Trump said during a Greek Independence Day ceremony in March. “But you are the greatest, and I heard they love you over there.”
Guilfoyle resigned after less than a year on the job, following several high-profile scandals, including a Wall Street Journal report alleging she asked a Trump donor to pay her $100,000 American Express bill. A separate Wall Street Journal report exposed alleged audio recordings from the World Economic Forum in January, where Guilfoyle was reportedly heard bragging about her connections to Greek business tycoons.
In a post on X, Guilfoyle called the allegations “false” and said she intends to “vigorously defend” her name.
Before Guilfoyle confirmed her departure on social media, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia told reporters the administration had asked her to resign.
