At least one new person will represent New Jersey in Congress come January after Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman announced she would retire at the end of her term.
New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, which includes parts of four counties, has served as a reliably Democratic District for decades. Of the District’s registered voters, 42% are Democrats.
It’s now up to party voters to decide their nominee in New Jersey’s June 2 primary election.
Twelve candidates are vying for their party’s nomination: Matt Adams, a former Middlesex councilman; Sue Altman, the former state director for U.S. Sen. Andy Kim; East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen; Adam Hamawy, an Army veteran and surgeon from Princeton; Kyle Little, a small business owner from North Brunswick; Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp; Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson; Shanel Robinson, a Somerset County commissioner; Squire Servance, a lawyer from Pennington; Sujit Singh, a technology consultant from West Windsor; Jay Vaingankar, a former U.S. Department of Energy policy advisor from Princeton Junction; and Sam Wang, a professor at Princeton University.
Gregg Mele, a frequent candidate from Plainfield, is the only Republican running.
