A frozen pizza product sold at Walmart and major grocery chains nationwide has been recalled over a potential salmonella risk, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notice.
Champion Foods said it is voluntarily recalling certain batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread after a supplier flagged possible salmonella contamination in milk powder used in a seasoning blend for the product. The recalled items were distributed at retailers including Walmart, Costco and Target, though no illnesses have been reported and testing on the final product did not detect the bacteria, the company said, adding the move was taken out of an abundance of caution.
The recall comes as part of a wider, ongoing food safety issue linked to potentially contaminated milk powder that has already triggered multiple product recalls—giving the alert broader national significance as affected items were distributed widely, including at Walmart and other major chains. While no illnesses have been reported with the Motor City recall, the notice raises urgency because salmonella can cause severe and sometimes life-threatening infections—particularly in vulnerable groups—and consumers may still have the recalled products in their freezers, given the sell-by dates extending into 2027.
“The recalled milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer that provides a seasoning blend used in our 5 cheese sauce blend,” the recall notice said. “To date, neither Champion Foods LLC nor our suppliers have received any reports of illness or injury related to these products. Routine testing conducted by the seasonings blend manufacturer prior to use in the production of the 5 Cheese Bread showed that the seasonings batches tested negative for Salmonella; however, we are taking action out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers.”

Salmonella Symptoms
Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, along with other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache and sometimes chills or loss of appetite, according to health agencies. Symptoms usually begin within six hours to six days after exposure and can last several days to about a week, though most people recover without treatment. In some cases, the illness can become more severe—especially in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis,” the recall notice said.
