The basics:
- $5M program funds World Cup 2026 events across New Jersey
- Applications now open for large events and local initiatives
- Program replaces Jersey City Fan Fest with statewide activations
- Deadlines: April 13 (large events), April 16 (community events)
Applications are now open for New Jersey’s $5 million World Cup Community Initiative. The statewide effort aims to bring FIFA World Cup 2026 events to local communities. It replaced a previously planned Jersey City Fan Fest.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill first announced the program last month. The initiative shifts the focus from a single, centralized celebration to a broader slate of fan experiences across the state.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will put New Jersey on a global stage, and its lasting impact will be felt in our neighborhoods,” said Sherrill. “These grants empower communities across the state to create experiences that reflect who we are — diverse, dynamic, and deeply connected to small businesses and local culture.”
Sharing the spotlight
Choose New Jersey will administer the initiative, in partnership with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and the FIFA World Cup 26 New York New Jersey Host Committee. The work will support public events, marketing efforts and community activations tied to the tournament.
“This initiative is about turning global attention into local opportunity,” said Jen Lenhardt, interim president and CEO, Choose New Jersey. “By partnering with organizations on the ground, we’re helping communities design events that not only celebrate the World Cup, but also elevate small businesses, support entrepreneurs, and reflect the cultural richness that defines New Jersey.”

The program will split funding across two categories.
Applications for large-scale multiday fan events held in multiple locations are due April 13 (available here). Meanwhile, applications for smaller community-based initiatives, such as watch parties, cultural festivals and street fairs, close April 16 (available here).
Getting everyone in the game
Officials say the World Cup Community Initiative aims to expand access to World Cup programming. Meanwhile it also aims to drive economic activity for small businesses, nonprofits, local organizations and communities across New Jersey.
“The FIFA World Cup presents a tremendous economic opportunity for municipalities and small businesses across New Jersey, and Gov. Sherrill is committed to ensuring these opportunities result in real impacts for residents,” said NJEDA CEO Evan Weiss.
NYNJ Host Committee CEO Alex Lasry said these grant funds and community events will provide affordable, accessible and authentic New Jersey experiences for every World Cup attendee, as well as economic impact throughout the Garden State.

“This summer, we’re going to welcome the world to our shores, and we can’t wait to show everyone why we’re the sports and entertainment capital of the world,” said Lasry.
Weiss added, “In a few months, all eyes will be on the Garden State and this initiative, led by Choose New Jersey, will highlight the vibrancy of New Jersey’s people, businesses, and communities to the world.”
