It appears that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will be returning to the Philadelphia Eagles. But don’t be surprised if Jim Schwartz replaces him in the future once Fangio does retire.
According to Mike Sando of The Athletic, “As rumors swirled that Fangio might retire, people with ties to former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Schwartz figured Schwartz might replace him. That is not going to happen now, but Schwartz could make sense for the Eagles in the future.”
Schwartz stepped down from his role in Cleveland after being bypassed for the head-coaching position in favor of former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. He remains under contract and seems likely to spend the 2026 season away from the sport, barring a team trading for his services.
Waiting an offseason might make the Eagles a logical fit, however. Rumors swirled that Fangio was considering retirement this offseason, though he seems set to return for at least one more year with the talented Birds defense. It could be his final hurrah, however, potentially setting the stage for Schwartz to return to the team where he was defensive coordinator between the 2016-20 seasons.
