Gold (GC=F) December futures opened at $4,382.50 per troy ounce on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, flat from Monday’s closing price. Gold fell slightly in early trading to $4,368.40 as of 6:27 a.m. ET.
Gold prices have shown impressive resilience despite the Federal Reserve’s rate increase earlier this month. The Fed’s unanimous decision was its first rate increase in three years.
Higher rates are a natural headwind for gold prices since they increase the opportunity costs for gold investors. But despite that, gold prices have held in a narrow range since last week’s decision, in part thanks to strong global demand, especially in China:
Purchases through August topped 1,000 tons, surpassing the total posted for the whole of 2025, according to the latest customs data, which goes back to 2017. Strong investment demand has kept onshore prices at a slight premium to world benchmarks, enticing imports, said Zijie Wu, an analyst at Jinrui Futures Co.
“The yuan has remained strong since the beginning of this year, creating favorable conditions for gold imports and enabling regulators to grant more generous approval quotas,” said Wu.
